About Us

The Great Suspender Company

The Great Suspender Company was founded in Jan 2004 by Sandra Lee a single mom who needed some extra income and wanted "to be there" for her small children. So she looked around and decided she would sell suspenders and thus the The Great Suspender Co. was formed.

Over the past 5 years The Great Suspender Company has specialized in selling Hold-Up Suspenders Company's "no-slip clip" dress suspenders. This decision has proved to be a wise one, as our customers love their suspenders and often return to buy additional suspenders.

Recently, The Great Suspender Co expanded our line of suspenders to over 300 styles and colors, we have also added Sloops Jeans and Casual Pants. We now carry suspenders for every occasion... work, play, and as always formal dress.

Great-Suspenders.com is managed and maintained by Red Lollipops Media, this new partnership will help us grow and continue to offer you the finest products for many years to come.

Suspender History

Although it is assumed that the French invented suspenders (braces) around he time of the French Revolution, there are many versions of were and who actually invented suspenders.

One such story is about a Davie Taylor a local eccentric in Firth, Scotland who fashioned a bib and brace sort of clip for hooking up his britches with the help of his able assistant.

Andrew Thomson and a young man named James Dreever files a patent in California in 1896. Some historians believe this patent had a major influence of suspender design because it was files about the time suspender first appeared.

The French did wear strips of ribbon fixed to button holes called "bretelles" around the time of the French revolution. Some say Napoleon wore a pair decorated with "bumblebees" a symbol of his native Corsica.

In the United States, Benjamin Franklin wore and poularized what were called "gallowes" around 1736.

In 1871 on of the first patents for suspenders (braces) was issued to Samuel Clemens better known today as Mark Twain.

The first gallowes had an H bach but in the 18th century they began to cross over and the X back was born. Around 1850 the Y back was introduced.

While the first patent for metal clip-on suspenders was first introduced in 1894 it wasn't until 1996 that a non-slip clip design was introduced by Hold-Up Suspender Company that suspenders realized any improvement.

As suspender make comeback, fashion write, Josh Sims, makes the that "using some kind of belted technique to cinch your trousers so they cling your waistline is clearly not going yo allow your trouser to hang better. Trouser just don't look as good with a belt as they do with suspenders."

A fact many business men have known for years... Suspenders are now offered in many differnet styles, fabrics and designs, whether you are a tradesman or an excutive, just wanting to make a fashion statement Great Suspenders has a pair of suspenders that is just right for you and your lifestyle.
